Math On-A-Stick Committee is looking for members!

As Math On-A-Stick at the Minnesota State Fair prepares for year 8, we are also preparing and planning for the long-term sustainability of the largest family math play event at the second-largest state fair in the nation.

The Math On–A-Stick committee of the MCTM Board seeks 3-to-5 volunteers for monthly, remote meetings to organize procedures, digital resources, and physical materials to support and implement this annual event.

Meetings will be remote via Zoom. While there are some tasks that will require some members to be physically in the same space—especially as the event approaches starting in early August—being able to be physically present is not a requirement for joining the committee. You only need a few hours a month; one for a remote meeting, and another 1 to 3 hours to complete the work of the committee, which will include:

  • Establishing and maintaining the volunteer database
  • Recruiting volunteers
  • Recruiting, selecting, and scheduling visiting mathematicians and mathematical artists
  • Recruiting and scheduling the leadership team that is on site each day of the fair
  • Ensuring routineg maintenance tasks are assigned, including set up before the fair, take down after, laundry, and others
  • Writing a post-fair report for the State Fair and MCTM
  • Expressing MCTM’s gratitude to volunteers, leaders, mathematicians, and artists
  • Communicating with State Fair staff as needed

Come join the fun folks making the math fun happen this summer and beyond! Contact Math On-A-Stick Director Christopher Danielson by email: mathematics.csd@gmail.com with questions, or to volunteer your time.
