April 2026

Message from MCTM President

“Mathematics belongs to all of us. Mathematics is part of our everyday lives and is rooted in all cultures. Equitable access to mathematics for each and every student is accomplished by recognizing, respecting, and attending to the diversity of our students with the aim of ensuring that all students are able to learn and thrive.”

While we are in Duluth, we want to highlight the Ojibwe community that has stewarded the land for time immemorial to bring awareness of local contexts within our learning community (Dimension 2). The Chief Buffalo Memorial Project, “Center of All Good Things” Mural, Indigenous First Art & Gift Shop, Tweed Museum of Art, and the Ojibwe culture and history shared at Dunlap Island in Cloquet are just a few places to visit. You may also notice place names such as Gichi-Ode' Akiing (Lake Place Park), Gichigami (Lake Superior), and Onigamiinsing (Duluth). I encourage you to read the Minnesota Native American Essential Understandings for Educators, to continue growing your knowledge.

The Spring Conference Committee connected the themes of the conference to our standards to continue MCTM’s focus on providing relevant and timely professional development; Data Analysis & Probability, Instructional Practices, Equity & Access, and Benchmark Contexts. Our goal is for each of you to build your confidence and skills in implementation, creating the conditions so all students can “expand professional opportunities, understand and critique the world, and experience the joy, wonder and beauty of mathematics” (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics [NCTM], 2018).

We have added additional volunteers at the conference to help with finding sessions, answering any questions, and building connections among participants. We hope you find connections between your teaching and new learning, connections across the new strands and connections among each other. Your attendance will spark new learning, curiosity and joy among your colleagues and students. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Let’s put our minds together and see what kind of future we can build for our children” (Tatanka Iyotake [Chief Sitting Bull], 1868).

Laura Wagenman, MCTM President

2026 Symposium

Join esteemed Ojibwe scholar and educator Anton Treuer for an interactive training designed for Minnesota’s K–12 math educators, principals, coaches, specialists, and instructional leaders. This session will deepen your understanding of Minnesota’s Indigenous communities, histories, and local places, while guiding your team to take practical first steps toward weaving these perspectives into math instruction. Together, we will explore ways to create mathematics learning experiences that honor Indigenous knowledge, build cultural relevance, and inspire student engagement.

NCTM Update

From the NCTM Desk: Spring Into Professional Learning
By: Becky Rahm – Your Minnesota NCTM Representative

As we move into April, it’s a natural time to reflect on the school year while also looking ahead. Even in these busy final months, small steps in professional learning can have a meaningful impact—both now and into next year.

Free For All – April Webinars
On April 7, the MTLT Teacher Talk will be discussing the article “Corvettes, Curve Fitting, and Calculus” from the legacy journal Mathematics Teacher.

In March, the free Webinar was titled: Deliberate Practice in Action: Strengthening Instruction Through AI-Empowered Simulation (Open to All) This session highlighted how technology-enhanced practice, including generative AI simulations, can support educators in strengthening their instructional skills.

Membership Highlight – Save on NCTM Publications
NCTM membership offers year-round support through journals, webinars, and classroom-ready resources. As you begin thinking about next year, now is a great time to explore tools and ideas that can shape your future instruction.

Effective Teaching Practice Spotlight - From NCTM’s Principles to Action - April: Build Procedural Fluency from Conceptual UnderstandingAs the year progresses, it can be tempting to focus on procedures and coverage. However, NCTM reminds us of the importance of ensuring that students continue to build understanding alongside fluency. Providing opportunities for students to explain their thinking, make connections, and engage in meaningful practice helps solidify learning in lasting ways.

Consider incorporating one intentional strategy this month—such as asking students to justify their solutions, compare multiple methods, or reflect on their learning. Small shifts in practice can have a significant impact on student understanding.

Spring is a great time to invest in your own growth. Thank you for your continued work supporting mathematics education across Minnesota.  I hope to see you in Duluth!
