2025 Symposium

Symposium Description: As many teachers look to add high-yield tasks to their repertoire, the struggle to make it all work becomes real.  Let's examine how problem-based lessons can be used throughout the scope of a unit and how we can harness their power to move student thinking forward.  We'll identify strategies and explore tasks that help us find a healthy balance between application, conceptual understanding, and procedural fluency.

The Progression Videos are a series of videos that show how math concepts build and grown through the grade levels.

This session will address the proposed 2022 MN Academic Standard for Mathematics Number Five, Number Relationships.

Assessment in a System of Practice

This month's MathBits continues to explore new professional development materials found on the Minnesota STEM Teacher Center website. Looking at a larger 'System of Practice' model as a framework, the role of assessment is explored. Assessment is not an exit slip. That's a tool. Assessment is an act of interpretation of data gathered before a lesson (prior knowledge), during the lesson (formative assessment), and after a unit has been completed (summative assessment). The type of feedback is also outlined. Read more!

About the Mathematics: Making Sense of the Commutative Property or Multiplication

A recent visit to a third grade intervention math class led to an interesting conversation around the commutative property of multiplication. In spite of its seemingly simple explanation, the commutative property has some abstract complexities to it. This requires deeper conversations for students to engage in so they build a more robust understanding of this key algebraic property. Read more!
