April 2025

Message from MCTM President

By Kristin Johnson, President

Spring has arrived, and with it comes a time of reflection and new growth. April always feels like a season of transition—both in nature and in our work as educators. As my term as MCTM president comes to a close at the spring conference, I find myself reflecting on the incredible progress we’ve made together. MCTM has expanded professional development opportunities, launched engaging book studies, and strengthened our commitment to equity. We continue to support the implementation of the 2022 math standards, and the MCTM High School Task Force has worked hard to develop recommendations to provide valuable guidance for high schools and districts as they transform the future of mathematics. Most importantly, MCTM is listening to its members—striving to provide the resources and support you ask for and need, all through the dedication of our amazing volunteers. Read more

2025 Symposium

Symposium Description: As many teachers look to add high-yield tasks to their repertoire, the struggle to make it all work becomes real.  Let's examine how problem-based lessons can be used throughout the scope of a unit and how we can harness their power to move student thinking forward.  We'll identify strategies and explore tasks that help us find a healthy balance between application, conceptual understanding, and procedural fluency.

The Progression Videos are a series of videos that show how math concepts build and grown through the grade levels.

This session will address the proposed 2022 MN Academic Standard for Mathematics Number Five, Number Relationships.

What I Discovered By Playing Card Games with My 8th Grade Students

Most math educators can agree that in today’s world, playing board games and card games has become a lost art.  Gone are the days of sitting around the table at home playing UNO, Old Maid or even Yahtzee.  Children and adults may still play those games, but there is an electronic version of these games readily available at any time.  After being out of the classroom for 5 years, I made it a priority this school year to implement card and dice games with my 8th graders and to also incorporate some cross-grade level activities with our 4th grade students. Math Moments in Early Childhood

We know a child’s math identity is so important for the child to fully engage with mathematical experiences. We know that caregivers’ attitudes about math have a strong influence on how their children view math. We also know that positive early math experiences are a strong predictor for children’s later success in both reading and math, and can predict high school graduation and even future income.

In fall of 2024, I applied for the MCTM Teacher Incentive Grant (TIG). The purpose of the grant was to give me an opportunity to go into daycare environments to set up math explorations around spatial reasoning. I needed a lot of materials if this was going to work. The TIG made this possible. Read MORE.

A Document in Progress – How Does Explicit Instruction Practices Fit, if at all, into (Guided) Inquiry-Based Classroom Environments?

In the January issue of MathBits, the first of what will be a series of articles describing the differences and similarities between explicit/direct instruction and (guided) inquiry/dialogic-based instructional practices. In that issue, Aimee Albrecht used the concept of 'adversarial collaboration' to assist in navigating these approaches towards student learning. This issue works to define various terms that one hears in such discussions. The ultimate goal of this series is to provide a compilation of key information so as districts move through MTSS integration of services, curriculum adoption, staff professional development, etc. one has the depth of information needed to make such decisions as well grounded as possible. Dr. Victoria Jacobs, inside Out: Examining the Meaning and Purpose of Our Questions

In the November issue of MathBits, an article discussed the importance of what is involved in posing questions to elicit student thinking in one's teaching practice. A conversation with Vicki Jacobs  - a researcher at North Carolina State, Greensboro - on the Math Learning Center's Rounding Up Podcast was posted earlier in March. It is an interesting conversation about the type and timing of questions with students. This link allows you to listen and/or read the transcript. It is well worth your time to hear these insights on being more strategic with one's questioning technique.
